@Raffzeee If Mary was devoid of emotion, she would not have been 'driven' to apprehend Allie. That drive to succeed where her grandfather failed prompted her to kill her father and her lover. She's an emotionally conflicted mess. Discovering the secret behind Allie's powers is a puzzle that would give meaning to their deaths and her grandfather's work, and would solidify her purpose in the world. Without it, she's nothing but a lost and scared little girl. She's incredibly flawed, human and all.
