Footage taken from the Sea Shepherd vessel Bob Barker, which was engaged in blocking the slipway to the whale processing ship Nisshin Maru. Several Japanese harpoon vessels apparently tried to intimidate it before the Yushin Maru No. 3 decided to take more aggressive action to force it to change course. They failed, although they did cause damage.

I will be seeing if the Japanese Institute of Cetacean Research has released their own footage of the incident.

UPDATE: As of 2/7/2010, the ICR has not released any video of the clash, merely photos and-of course-claims that THEY were the ones who were rammed. Interestingly enough, though, they did not release a video of this incident, suggesting perhaps that they were, in fact, the ones guilty of the collision.

  • Hey all, this video does NOT "contain content from 'Bonsai TV,'" though perhaps Bonsai TV is showing this video on their channel, who knows. Anybody know how I can make that go away? This material was from Sea Shepherd, and is to my knowledge publicly-released footage, footage released to the media. I even asked a member of Sea Shepherd's crew for permission to post Ady Gil videos. Just figured I'd clarify that.

  • @Sighfin You are wrong, again. This is not a crossing situation it is an overtaking situation. In this case, the Japanese vessel is the give way vessel and they must yiled to the SS vessel. I'm always amazed at how many people really have no clue about maritime law......and yet they state as fact their erroneous conclusions.

  • Leave the whales alone and find other ways to do ur "research".

  • Yo my foot that it was yushin maru 3 ramming them. The barker clearly deliberatly got themselves hit just so they could fake that the Japanese rammed into them

  • @ORNonprophet

colregs part b s2 subsec 13 An overtaking vessel must keep out of the way of the vessel being overtaken. 'Overtaking' means approaching another vessel at more than 22.5 degrees abaft her beam. in this case jap vessel is overtaker and must give way, "Any subsequent alteration of the bearing between the two vessels shall not make the overtaking vessel a crossing vessel" just thought i might clarify ur point, and yes too few ppl know the law of the sea, inc sea sheppard at times.

  • I bet one dollar that the Barker sunk.

  • "Pirates" kill and steal. "Pirates" don't try to help anyone or anything. There is NOTHING the Sea Shepherds do that is "illegal" and so are not being sought for arrest.

The term "Eco Terrorist" isn't right either. It would indicate terrorism against the ecology. But the unnecessary killing of whales is the only activity here harming any part of nature

  • its stev ervion ramd by nishan maro №3

  • @drkuroneko Sea Shepard and its affiliates engage in pirate activities and it is only the good manners of the Japanese that keep you from being shot.

  • @1rockcut Not quite. Piracy is an international defined notion (UNCLOS Article 101), and what SSCS does fits the description. It is not a matter of opinion. It is a fact.

  • @drkuroneko who are the pirates is a matter of opinion

  • @1rockcut The vessel on the starboard was a pirate ship, and has no right of whatever.
