Lyrics

JUST LIKE NEW

That's the same engine under the hood
Carried young Elvis to Hollywood
Been cross country a time or two
And look at it now, it's just like new
He had a weakness for Cadillacs
A girl in the front and his friends in the back
That's the original paint job, too
Look at it now, it's just like new

Elvis was happy, he felt pretty good
Here he was driving to Hollywood
Gassing it up and pushing it through
Look at it now, it's just like new
According to one of Elvis' friends
He took it up to a hundred-and-ten
He just want to see what his Caddy would do
Look at it now, it's just like new

And my, my, what a beautiful machine
Oh boy, it rides just like a dream
Just think of all that it's been through
And look at it now, it's just like new

He drove it to Memphis come Christmas time
The weather so fair, the future so fine
Say Mama, them girls ain't as pretty as you
Look at her, Daddy, she's just like new
Elvis was always a dutiful child
And here everybody was thinking he's wild
Why, he bought his folks a Cadillac, too
And look at it now, it's just like new

===============================

As I pointed out several times in the video, the lead guitar on this track was played by Steve Cropper. Even if you don't recognize the name, I guarantee you've heard his guitar. Just one example: remember Soul Man -- the original version by Sam and Dave? Remember when Sam calls out, "Play it, Steve!" Well, Steve Cropper is THAT Steve. He played an integral part (several parts, actually) in the legendary Stax record label of the Sixties and early Seventies. Check Steve's Wikipedia page at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Cropper

And speaking of checking things out, do yourself a favor and get to know Jesse Winchester's music, if you haven't already done so. His 1999 Gentleman of Leisure album, from which the song Just Like New was taken, is terrific, but his recording career started 'way back in 1970, and you really can't lose with ANY of Jesse's albums. I think he has the finest voice in all of folk/rock/pop/country/whatever, and his songwriting is among the very best, too. I just wish more people knew about him. I consider finding Jesse's music one of the happiest and most satisfying musical discoveries of my rather long and extremely music-obsessed life!

  • I have been a big fan of Jesse since I first heard "Brand New Tennessee Waltz" in the early 70's. I'm also a big fan of Steve Cropper..."close your eyes and it's a young Steve Cropper.." (From 'Club Manhatten".

  • I am looking perhaps in ths wrong place for a song released back in the 80's called "too weak to say good bye". I thought it was by Jesse Winchester and the name of the song may not be too weak to say good bye but it is in the chorus, Any one remember such a song?

  • @anisawodskow29 Thanks! I'm glad that putting this up seems to be inspiring some folks to buy Jesse's wonderful music. His last album "Love Filling Station" is great too!

  • Excellent accompanying visuals to another great tune from the one and only Jesse Wichester talking Memphis, so thank you, thank you very much for the upload! I, for one can not get enough of the Man Jesse W. and the tasty licks that the incomparable, if not, one and only Steve Guitar Man Cropper lays down! Thanks also to You Tube for leaving the light on the space!

  • Re: Steve Cropper...he was with Booker T & the MGs when they backed Otis Redding at the Monterey Pop Festival. What a performance that was!
