Most dental hygienists provide patient education on Oral Hygiene & cleaning the teeth using Ultrasonic Scalers & hand instruments as well as the traditional rotating rubber cup & polishing paste. Being knowledgeable about almost all aspects of dentistry, they are an excellent resource for patients on the wide range of patient care -- fillings, onlays, veneers, crowns, root canals, etc. They take x-rays & record the condition of the teeth & gums, & the dentists findings of decay & oral disease.

Some hygienists do specialize. Those that work in Periodonists' offices are involved in the surgical procedures on the gums and bone supporting the teeth. They may be involved with the diagnostic work-up, placement and after-care for dental implants. Orthodontists often have hygienists working with them with orthodontic record taking, placement of brackets and orthodontic appliances as well as specially focused dental hygiene procedures and oral care instruction for patients with braces.
