"Nicholas, thanks for coming." Hazel breathed as she gestured for him to sit on the couch in the fort.
"Well, anything for you Hazel." Hazel raised an eyebrow and Nick reddened. "Well, uh- you know what I mean."
"No, that doesn't matter. Look. I have something I have to tell you." Hazel sat on the small table in front of the couch and faced Nick.
"Well?"
"I just.. Don't know how to tell you."
"Well," Nick said slowly. "Us normal people, usually start with words... But, hey... Sometimes hand signals, or I don't know, ancient dances, or I know... Sky writing, they could all be just as effective, and perhaps add a little... Kaboom."
"You've been spending WAY to much time with Xanthe, you're starting to talk like her."
"No subject changing." Nick pointed. He didn't miss much.
"Look. I know you don't exactly love, you know, Joe and I, I don't know why, I mean, I think it's because there's a huge age gap, well, not huge, just- reasonable, and it could be because you're my best friend and it kinda created a few, ripples, and I kind of... well, I was a bitch, in the way things turned out, and the way we came to be, and I don't know, maybe if I wasn't such a complete jerk, there'd still be a you and I and I wouldn't be babbling hopelessly, avoiding what I have to say, because I know you won't approve, I mean, sure, you'll be more supportive than I deserve, and you won't express your dislike, but you'll hate it, I mean, you'll really not want it, but it is how it is, and I'm really freaking out, and well, I guess, I should like, you know, say what I need to... but.... Baby steps... I can't believe that for so long, I've been such a jerk and you've stood by me, supporting me through it all, making me want to live, making me want to push for happiness, and I just kept stomping all over you, I suck Nick. I know I do, and I know I never deserved any one as good as you, and I don't deserve Joe, but for some insane reason, he loves me, and I love him. Which brings me to the reason I asked you to meet with me, I can't dance around it, I mean, there's no outlet, okay, here goes everything. I'm moving in with Joe."
"You're right." Nick sighed after what seemed to Hazel, like a lifetime of silence. "I do hate it."
"I knew it." Hazel moved to the cushion next to Nick and looked up at him intently. "But..."
"But, You're happy. Which means, I'm happy."
"Nick. Look, you don't have to be so, supportive, I mean, you hate it. So, you know. Cause a riot, break things, throw things, scare me. Please, react."
"Okay." Nick took a deep breath. He felt his temper rising, which confused him. He was with Megan... well, he thought he was... but he hadn't heard from her in weeks. "Look. You're my best friend. You have been since we met, so I'm not going to react in some completely insane way. I'm happy for you, and that should be more than enough."
"Nick. I love you, with all my heart. I really do bu-"
"And I love you Hazel, I always have and I always will. I just, well, I don't understand." As Nick was leaving Hazel said something he wasn't to forget for many months.
"You don't love me Nick, you're still in love WITH me."
"Hey babe, sorry I took so long. Now, you have a choice, we can go out to some extravagent restaurant with what seems like a million tables, you know, the kind that you'll still be paying the tab in about twenty years, or, we can stay in, and I can cook you a gourmet meal, absoloutly free of cost. And as an added bonus, you get to make out with the uber hot chef before, during and after the meal." Joe said as he walked in the front door, his arms full of groceries.
"Gee, chef Joe, you make it so difficult for me to decide." Hazel looked up at her boyfriend flirtaciously and then at the bags. "Anything fragile?"
"Nothing, why?"
"Becuase" Hazel whispered, grabbing the back of Joes Neck and kissing him so passionately, anyone could feel it, "You're about to drop them." And she was right. As Hazel kissed Joe once more, with the same depth and passion, the bags dropped to the floor.
There was no denying it, Hazel was one of those girls who seemed completely harmless, but in actual fact, if she wanted to drive Joe crazy, all it ever took was a smile.
After the most delicious meal of chicken, salad, rice, white whine and tiramisu, Hazel spent the evening lying quietly in Joes arms on the bed.
"I told Nick today." Hazel whispered, sitting up slightly.
"I kinda figured."
"How?" Hazel turned to face Joe, somewhat surprised.
"I went to his place earlier and he wouldn't even keep the door open for more than ten seconds, I think he almost used the phrase, "Bro's before ho's." He's just being Nick though, he'll live.."
"I know baby, I know.. It's just so hard."
Joe kissed the top of Hazels head and pulled her back into his chest.
"I love you Hazel. I do."
this story reminds me of "australia" coz joe sings most of the happy bits, and nick sings most of the angry bits =D
