Vlieland, panoramic view from the lighthouse

I searched the internet and it was kind of hard to find consistent information on how Vlieland came to be an island. It is clear though, that there was a warm period in the middle ages, accompanied by storms and tidal floods. On Wikipedia, it is stated that Vlieland became an island during one of those tidal floods: the Saint-Lucia flood (de Sint Lucia-vloed) in 1287. This would have been the 5th largest recorded flood in the earth´s history. Before this time, Vlieland was connected to the rest of Holland.
