You can match the Root note of the chords the guitar part is playing, or harmonize in 3rds or fifths. Counterpoint is effective, too - creating 2 melodic lines.

the most important part of writing a bass line is knowing when NOT to play while interweaving between the other instruments/vocalists in the piece of music - and that is not always following the root or the rhythm guitar riff <<< that is brainless and tends to add zero feeling to the piece

@beficasita666 That's a very lame and ignorant question to ask someone. Just because someone has short hair doesn't make them a skinhead. I buzz my hair to almost bald, doesn't make me a skinhead. I just like the hairstyle. Besides, being in the military I have to have short hair anyways, might as well cut it really short so I'm not having to cut it every week.
