Hehehe thanks! you made my day with that. I always worry about that same thing. But coming from a professional it really does help.
And I'd love to see that tutorial!

I loved your submission, congrats on the win. Can I ask how it was done?

Thanks, Ricky. It was done in After effects CS4. I plan on doing a tutorial on it very soon since it's too involved to write down here. I also read your profile and saw you want to do this kind of stuff for a living like I do. You certainly have the potential. Like art, it's either you have it, or you don't. And you have it.

Looked a bit like paper, but certainly better than my attempt.

I tried to make the pieces look thicker but it started to look too much like jigsaw puzzle exploding. So instead I made it look like the WAR OF THE WORLDS disintegration ray.

yeah, the only reason I kept the repetitions down on mine was because the photo I chose was so much closer, little pieces would have seemed... out of scale? dunno. but on yours, I pretty much bought it, especially because it was from a distance. and it looks like you used a higher force motion blur pass count, which I should have done.

I used RMSB very similar to foreced blur. The problem is, since the fragments move randomly, the pluging doesn't know which is the direction so things tend to look swirly. That's ok in my case since swirly looks more organic.
