My $85 1966 Sears Suburban 12 garden tractor, now with a few more bugs worked out. In this video the tractor was in high range, high gear; it's really slow in low range. I still need to tweak the carb and governor to get rid of that surging, and it needs an air cleaner and muffler. I may have both of those things somewhere (from another engine), I just need to find them.

  • lets say you want speed instead of being able to climb a tree. how do you get more mph out of the suburban. 25 would be fast enough for now, i hit 37mph in neutral down hill, scared the s**t outta me.....

  • @MrDamnifiknow A bigger pulley on the engine makes more speed. This thing would get pretty squirrelly above about 10-12 mph though.

  • I can see how the smaller wheels on the front transfer the weight. i have to ease off the break/clutch real easy when taking off in 3rd/high or the damned thing will be on top of me in a heart beat. I'm guessing it's because the of the original wheels /tires sitting a few inches higher than the ones in the video..?

  • @MrDamnifiknow Exactly.

  • @Possumlivingdotcom imagine what 37 was like......i'll have to fire mine up in a little while & do a few wheelies. it's all original other than the paint. i've got pic of me on it 40 years ago. the grand parrents kept it well maintained. thanks for the reply

  • @Z3CHYD I think wheels from a John Deere garden tractor will fit too. The spindle is 3/4"; most of the wheels I have found have a 5/8" bore. No biggie. They're out there; I just don't want to pay big bucks. I may cut the center out of a couple wheels that have a 5/8" bore, and weld these centers into them.

  • @Possumlivingdotcom I have front wheels off of an older cub cadet on mine, fits perfect and wider tires than the stock ones on the SS

  • @suddenkilla24 It's a 3 speed hi-lo. It's geared really low, too. In this video it was in its highest gear.

These transaxles are very strong. Pullers use them with up to 35 horsepower, and they stand up to it. I think the hubs will break before the tranny does, as long as you keep oil in it.

  • dude the suburbans kick ass i got a 3 speed and 1 reverse 1987 craftsman im gettin a smaller pulley its got like a 12-13 inch right now but the smaller one will make me fly away. Im gettin nice super lug tires for the rear and i also want to get the suburban tranny is yours a 3 speed hi lo drive or a 4 speed hi lo drive?? Is the tranny good on these??

  • I got a Hahn rototiller for 15 dollars once and my dear wife...she doesn't understand these things...said, "You paid 15 dollars for THAT?!?" You got a deal!
