Brand new review of the Roland GR-55 guitar synthesizer showing how I set the unit up for the review, which guitar I used, various sounds from the unit completely unedited sound demonstrations and lastly a summary of the unit.

This review is 15 minutes long and could have been at least twice as long - I recorded three hours of video and compressed in to just 15 minutes.

If there is interest in other sounds then tell me and I will make an extended video showing many more sounds.

I did not use all pristine sounds either, and tried to demonstrate some of the shortcomings of this pedal - it's not a perfect pedal by any means and you should watch the video right through to get lots of info about issues I had and what I think of the unit, highlighting some problems is at the end of the video.

This video and it's soundtrack is copyright A B Mckenzie - tonymckenzie.com 2011. All rights reserved.

  • i prefer the guitar->cable->tube amp method...a few stompboxes now and then maybe a wah and a volume pedal,i dont like stuff like this that try to combine a million things in one they give me a headache, plus they have patch time change issues and sound like absolute crap, except axe fx2 but iam not thinking into robbing a bank just yet to buy one...if i want synth i'll buy a synth,if i dont have an extra pair of hands to use it live,i'll buy a keyboard robot...LOL

  • @dpapaioannow I understand. But theres good news... buy a Kemper Amp at over half the price of the Axe FX II and its a better product (re sound is nigh on exactly the same as the amp you profile) and all without having to buy those two processors rubbish that some harp on about. Check the kemper out.... it eats FX II for breakfast ;-)

  • i bought the GR55 last year.after 2 days i send it back to my store. It has bad tracking and bad sounds! And if you try to play via Midi, forget this machine. The GR55 is not good for musicians.

    Throw it away.

  • @RaerY1959 Well You have some pertinent points... but throw it away? not really :-)

  • @tonymckenziecom Hi Tony,i'll hope that you know what i mean with 'throw it away' ;-).The GR55 is about 600Euro.I play since 1997 my GR30.And it works perfect with Gk3.Sero Latency and a very good tracking also via Midi.To play Midi is important to me.If you play the GR55 via Midi,so you're wondering about, how bad the Midi-Signal is coming out.You can't play exactly Drums like from Toontrack or other instruments(Piano etc.).Check it out or make Midi-Recordings with GR55.The GR 09&GR 30 is better

  • @RaerY1959 Yes I know what you mean (I was just joking :-)

  • @tonymckenziecom sry i guess you allready answard my question sry for asking a dumb question

  • @tonymckenziecom hello i was wondering if you were using the same guitar/ GK3 pup for both the VG 99 the GR55? i was having trouble with note tracking at first but after adjusting things im getting rid of most of the note tracking problems in this video

  • @scottcycleguitarist Like I said, my issues with it were that the tracking on the VG-99 is PERFECT and this unit is not - same setting up same guitar, same style. Its still a nice enough unit but I did sell mine later.

  • @scottcycleguitarist I am also aware of that aspect too (being the owner of a VG-99) but I could not improve 'tracking' from what you see here. It does work and it depends I thought on what style of music you play and how you play.
