Li Ying Li is a 66 year-old Chinese immigrant woman who does not speak any English. Ms. Li had an abnormal pelvic examination when she was at Asian Health Services (AHS) She was referred to a Gynecologic Oncologist by her family doctor. At her first visit to see the specialist, Ms. Li was disappointed to find that there were no interpreters to help her communicate with the Gynecologic Oncologist. This language barrier was a huge concern for Ms. Li because she needed to understand her health condition.
With the help of AHS, Ms. Li was able to get an interpreter to go with her to her next gynecologist oncologist visit. Ms. Li now strongly advocates for more medical interpreters so that medical providers can communicate with their patients.
