Hello everybody, this is Weiwei Chen, I am taking the video in Dubai now since I am attending an international conference named Education without border 2009 here. The topic I want to talk about today is what kind of role should mass media be between the globalization and the culture protection in todays world.
As you know, the globalization has become an irreversible trend nowadays, and along with the globalization, people are paying more attention to the culture protection. In my opinion, the mass media should play an important role in this issue, but maybe the role is not as same as people considered before.
First, which is also the most obvious, is that, the media should make the greatest efforts to promote its national culture. Because people have to understand the culture before they decide to protect it. Also as to the young generation and foreigners, the advertisement of media can be viewed as a useful propaganda tool to build a strong basis of the culture. However, I wont talk much about it since maybe everybody has already known the importance of it.
Second, which is the main point I want to point out, is that the mass media should also give more information of other cultures and introduce them to our nationals, in order to protect our culture. Maybe many people do not agree with it and view it as a kind of harm to their own culture.
Let us take an example, in order to protect a child from accident injury. One method is just locking him inside the room, but I am sure no rational parents will do that. Another method is let your child go out, face different challenges and learn the skills of survival.
Negative protection or positive protection, I think it is the most important question we should consider when dealing the relationship between the globalization and the cultural protection. If we want our culture can be spread longer and has a enduring vitality, we must choose protect our culture in a positive way, that is, put it with other cultures and let it get its skills to develop and survive itself. In this process, what the mess media should do, is introducing other culture as much as possible, but do not give people some conclusion about which culture is better, which is worse. Todays media give too much judge remarks of the culture. In my opinion, since there are no absolutely good culture or bad culture, what the media should do, is just give enough correct information, and let people judge by themselves.
As to Dubai, it is such an international city, and you can find the propaganda of other culture everywhere. However, the local culture is not disappearing, instead, it is everywhere and more people get the opportunity to understand it. In the conference, we exchange our cultures, and the result is that, all the cultures are developing together and nothing is disappearing.
