The amazing local children's celebrity, Fred Kirby in a retrospective tribute on WBTV. Fred hosted a Saturday morning cartoon show for umpteen years with his featured sidekick Uncle Jim MaHaffey. Fred channeled Roy Rogers as he sang folk songs, Sons of the Pioneers songs, as well as his own composition "How We Love The Li'l Rascals", a series he featured as well. He had an amazing ablitiy to play a solid rhythm and sing freely as though someone else was playing. He also had a great heart in appearing at events for severely disabled children such as York County Fair's Disabilities Day. Sons of the Pioneers fans will especially enjoy the mini-segment of "Skyball Paint"

  • For my 7th birthday in Wadesboro, NC, my mom bought a bunch of bandanas, filled them with popcorn and candy, tied them on the end of yardsticks, and about 10 of my friends and I marched like military hobos the 3-4 blocks to the movie theater that Saturday morning to see a triple-feature western and featuring Fred Kirby up on stage singing between the films. When he sang Big Rock Candy Mountain, I was in heaven.

  • Ok if this don't make you smile and warms you heart you must have a really do have a hard heart :)

  • I'm so glad I ran accross this video. I was raised in Gastonia, NC and remember Fred Kirby and Uncle Jim the Happy coming on. Seeing this brought back many wonderful memories and made my day!

  • What ever happened to Buffalo Ranch? I remember the piano playing chicken almost like I was there yesterday. I wish I could have been, because now my little boy would love it.

  • I miss Mr. Fred Kirby and his show as well. I grew up watching him too. I had the wonderful pleasure of seeing and speaking to him many times throughout my childhood as well as one special time as an adult with my own child! As a child, I would see him at Tweetsie Railroad along with CALICO. I'd see & talk to him at Shoney's Big Boy Restaurant! AND in 1988, He came into my work and I was so star struck lol. He autographed a photo card for me and even SANG to me. I will never forget it.

  • Dad would turn the antenna rotor to NNE just before 1:00 p.m. and he, mom, brother, sister, and I would watch "Fred Kirby's Rascals" down here in Spartanburg. Some time ago now. . .thanks very much for posting this; you've made my day.

  • Thanks for posting this. Loved Fred and the Little Rascals. Watched from Shelby, North Carolina, usually with a can of Charles Chips and a bottle of SunDrop.

  • Thanks for posting this video.......I used to watch Fred and Uncle Jim everyday. How we love the Lil Rascals. Everyone needs to remember that Fred Kirby was the Sheriff of Tweetsie Railroad.

  • Thank you so much Mr. Kirby. You were my hero when I was 5 .
