This is the opening track of the fantastic 1964 Argo release "Carnival Sketches" by trumpetist Gene Shaw, with compositions ad arrangements by Richard Evans. It's not impossible - but still hard - to find a copy of this album. A Japanese edition of this album is rumoured to have been released on cd.

Here is some Wiki on Shaw himself:
"Clarence Eugene Shaw, sometimes credited as Gene Shaw (June 16, 1926, Detroit - August 17, 1973, Los Angeles) was an American jazz trumpeter.

Shaw played piano and trombone as a child. He began playing trumpet around 1946 after hearing Dizzy Gillespie's Hot House while recovering from injuries sustained in the Army. He attended the Detroit Insitute of Music and studied under Barry Harris, and played locally with Lester Young, Wardell Gray, and Lucky Thompson.

He moved to New York City in 1956 and soon after began playing with Charles Mingus's Jazz Workshop in 1957. Among his credits with Mingus is Tijuana Moods. Later that year he destroyed his instrument and quit music over a fight with Mingus. He did not return to playing until 1962, after which time he formed his own ensemble. He retired again in 1964 and returned to music once more in 1968."

Discography as leader:

Breakthrough (Argo Records, 1962)
Debut in Blue (Argo, 1963)
Carnival Sketches (Argo, 1964)

  • The guitarist reminds me of later recording I hear on Kudo Records a Creed Taylor label with Little Esther Phillips, or the guitarist with Grover Washington, Jr. on that label, Spinoza.

  • Over and over again absorbing this with every fiber of my recall. Thank you again, and again.

  • You are my Hero, my heart is so full of joy I am bursting with radiance. Thank you.

  • I always loved this one too. Brings back memories. It's great that so many people are still aware of his music.

  • I love this album. A truly great find. Thanks for uploading.

  • Gene Shaw, also known as Clarence Shaw played with Mingus in the 50s and produced at least three great LPs. His best tune is probably Autumn Walk
