James Burke explains the infrastructure designed to protect the astronauts in the event of the Saturn exploding on the launch pad. Unfortunately no one says how they could predict such a catastrophe far enough in advance

  • Gee, NASA was stealing billions, and wasting millions.

    Still a *very* profitable hoax.

  • @nameofthepen whatever apollo cost, it was a fraction of the cost of the vietnam war, and that's just the dollars, 3 people got killed in the apollo programme, I hate to think of how many were killed and disabled in vietnam

  • @alijanlondon - Agreed. But, what's your point?

    A hoax is a hoax.

  • @nameofthepen my point is that it is not a hoax and you are a first prize twat

  • The description states that "no one says how they could predict such a catastrophe far enough in advance". However, the entire launch abort system is described in great detail in the discovery series "Moon Machines".

There were three wires that ran the length of the rocket. If the circuit in any two of those wires was disrupted at the same time, it indicated that the the structure of the rocket was failing, and instantly activated the launch abort rocket on the tip of the rocket.

  • Thanks for the info. The three wires would in deed indicate the structure was failing, but if those circuits were purely to activate the LES, that sort of safetly system would only be good in the few seconds prior to, or during launch. The system he's describing is for situations where they'd need to get out quick before the LES was armed, such as a major fuel leak, or indications of dangerously malfunctioning or overheating systems etc.

  • Gee NASA spent a lot of money on this safe room.

If they were fleecing America why did they spend the money for this safe-room for the crew?

There's just one of many money saving short-cuts NASA DIDN"T take to save money they were fleecing from us Americans.

  • 6 inch steel door, eh?

  • @tippman2k01

    it's all gone.

  • i wonder if u can still go into this room? lol
