As many of the faithful look forward to the beatification of the 19th century convert John Henry Cardinal Newman, a society bearing his name is continuing his mission of promoting quality and orthodoxy in Catholic colleges and universities. It has been more than a century since Venerable Cardinal Newman wrote The Idea of a University, but a new college guide published by the Cardinal Newman Society is helping students of the 21st century choose a school with a strong Catholic identity. The Cardinal Newman Society has published The Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College. This book highlights 21 North American schools that have built a reputation for orthodoxy and excellence both in and outside the classroom. Schools in the book include Christendom College, Franciscan University of Stuebenville, and Thomas More College of Liberal Arts. According to Patrick Reilly, president and founder of the Cardinal Newman Society, the schools profiled were chosen because they provide an environment that fosters their students' faith. The Cardinal Newman Society is a national organization in the U.S. to promote authentic Catholic higher education in the vision of Pope Benedict and Ex Corde Ecclesiae. And The Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College is our way of promoting those colleges in the U.S. that have a very strong Catholic identity. While the Cardinal Newman Society aims to provide support for all 224 Catholic schools in the U.S., it promotes the selection highlighted in the guide because these schools demonstrate a strong fidelity to the faith and because they provide students with spiritual support, a strong curriculum, and orthodoxy in the classroom. We are very excited about these schools and we encourage students both within the US and outside of the US who are interested in a very strong Catholic education to look at these schools. The current edition of Newman college guide is available online at www.thenewmanguide.com. The new edition will be available on the Internet in the fall.
