Chadian rebels have reportedly pulled out of Ndjamena, the capital.
But there is confusion over whether they withdrew voluntarily, or were driven out by government forces.
Civilians have been wounded since the fighting began on Saturday, and witnesses say bodies litter the streets.
Local residents now face a terrifying future.
