LFD: Dominik! Thanks for commenting. I was hoping that you would jump into this discussion. I really found the videos that you made on German censorship very informative (everyone should check them out). That is EXACTLY the type of censorship that I am against.
I agree with all of your points. What we need to do is to work toward an intelligent way of keeping kids "safe" while not limiting the rights of adults.
Take care my friend, and thanks again!

Violent films do not belong into kids hands, but banning them for everyone is the wrong way.
Here in Germany even 18+ films are cut or banned, so not even grown-ups can watch them. That's a real reason for people to complain.

The R does not give a recommendation for what age the film is appropiate. I think films like Kill Bill or Hostel should not be banned (adults should be able to get easy acces to these flms), but children should not be able to see them.
I must say I'm kinda shocked when I sometimes see 8 year old kids in documentaries about Horror films that say that Jason Vorhees is their favorite serial killer, like Kane Hodder proudly tells on the Jason X-DVD special features.

The problem is just that the censors and people/groups who want to ban violent films or try to limit their distribution do not separate between protecting children from violent content (which is right) from censorship also for adult audiences.
I guess the MPAA-rating system, as far as I understand it, is not so good a times. The R-Rating is not good IMO, because it actually gives 13-year old kids access to films that are really violent and suitable for adults only....
Thanks for this response, I understand where you are coming from and I agree with what you are saying.
Having seen this, I would like to invite you into a project some of us are working on.
It is a podcast as well, but a discussion-based podcast. Rather then simply speaking one's mind, and being the only voice, we will have several live viewers speaking to one another in a round-table-esque environment. This will be done through Skype. If are are able to join, or want to know more, PM.

My son is 11 and I wouldn't let him watch Kill Bill. I remember watching movies when I was 10 that changed me or traumatized me in some way so I think there should be restrictions and guidelines. I like the ratings system as a parent it does help and I am glad it is around.

ringrosehouse: Thanks for commenting. I believe that it is obvious that films affect kids, just as they do you & me; whether it makes them "violent" is a separate question.
My brother & his wife went to see MARLEY & ME the other day (thinking it was a comedy, based on the trailer). Well, let's just say that the film takes an unexpected turn and he told me they were hauling crying children out of the theater in droves. Lol
Anyway...
Happy New Year!
