in 1961, Gibson introduced the "SG" caling it a Les Paul without Les' authority. He didn't like it, and they changed the name to SG
but when this guitar camed out, it was the Les Paul Custom
-
it was called les paul custom in the 60's

it used to be called les paul along time ago but Les Paul didn't like it and they already had a les pauk so they took it off and left the les paul name on it, but i just still think les paul, but sg

They stopped making Les Pauls in 1959 due to the success of the strat, so they decided to release the "SG" (Solid Guitar) and continued the "Les Paul" motif on release. Due to the iconic name, and Les prototyping their first solid body guitar 10-15 years previous, It was a cheaper alternative to manufacture and it wasn't until they re-released the Les paul body shape again in the 60's that they change fit officially to "SG" and made it it's own guitar. These are now called SG-400 "Les paul."

Its supposed to be a replica of the old sg's from way back in the late 50's or early 60's when they changed the les paul model to that. Thats why it says les paul.
