Think you will find it was recorded long before Ms Warwick. Back in 63 by Richard Chamberlain, who, if memory serves, played Dr Kildare. It was also released by the writer Burt Bacharach in 68. All this does not take anything away from the voice that was Karen Carpenter.

Close to you was written by the great Burt Bacharach and Hal David, sung by Dionne Warwick, but her version had not such a great success as that of Carpenters some years after (in 1970).
