In March 2007, the transite asbestos siding was removed from my house. Underneath was a layer of cardboard. Under THAT was the original house clapboard, circa 1906. Some of it is in really bad shape, and all of it needs a lot of TLC. Video starts on east side, walks past south side and then ends on west side of house.

My 1899 house is covered with those asbestos shingles. Did you remove them yourself or did you have someone do it? They're very brittle and break easily.

Well it is rather funny. I paid a contractor to remove 25% of them. I came home and the @#$@#$@## had removed them all. In Indy, there are laws/guidelines about the proper way to remove and dispose of asbestos shingles yourself. It's not too hard. My neighbor watched these guys remove the shingles. He says they "had" breathing gear on site, but never bothered to wear it.

Are you sure your shingles have asbestos? Some versions of transite do not. I had mine tested at a lab. Good luck!

They definitely are asbestos, I pulled a broken shingle off and on the back it said "Flintkote-Asbestos" on it. Can't afford professional removal. I was thinking of just painting them since they take paint well, but in the back of the house many are cracked and eroding where a leaking downspout dumped water on them. I'm assuming removal might not be a problem if you wet them down and took them off intact without breaking them?
