This warm narrative shows a community brought together by gold, but hints at the unfairness of the business of mineral extraction. Deep in the Amazon rainforest lie the muddy gold mines of Patrocinio. King of the gold mines is Ze Arara. He runs Patrocinio as a feudal community - building bridges, stocking the local shops and supporting a small police force. "I'm judge, I marry, I christen, divorce .. I do everything!" he claims, evading difficult questions about the nature of his huge fortune by collapsing into peals of laughter. As one of the richest men in Brazil, he has managed to extract over 200 tons of gold from the harsh, tropical forest. We follow Arara as he gets his gold smelted, catalogued and packed up onto his private jet. Meanwhile, down town the 'garimpeiros' (miners) are getting drunk, brawling and swapping lumps of gold for a night of pleasure. Arara's men live in tumble-down shacks. Knee deep in muddy water, miners search for the day's quota of 100 grams. They are philosophical, "we don't know why we're here. For the money, the gold?... it's hard to earn. It's a continuous search." It's a town where gold dictates the rhythm of life.
