A Benchmade Griptilian test like no other. Crocket takes the popular Griptilian 551 into the backcountry to put it through the ringer.

A huge shout out to Crocket for helping us out with this vid. He's the kind of guy that if you're not following on YouTube, you should be. Check out his channel here:

He also put together a little raw behind-the-scenes footage:

If you haven't subscribed to KnifeHQ, BladeHQ's YouTube channel, we're not sure what you're thinkin' son. Fix it:

Everything you see in this video is legit. We didn't prepare anything, contrive anything or script anything. It was just a knife, a couple of guys and a camera. We realize this is not a wilderness blade. It wouldn't be our first choice in the backcountry. However, we tend to think there is merit in taking a folder out and seeing what it can handle in a wilderness situation-- not because it is meant for that purpose, but because it's possible that it might be the only thing you have in a pinch.

As a side note: this is a bit of an experimental video. If you like it, please let us know in the comments. If you want to see more material like this, let us know! Share it, give it a thumbs up, and tell us what else you would like to see.

As another side note: in full disclosure, we did not pay Crocket to say anything he said. We did work out a deal with him that involved the knife, but he proceeded with caution because he is not what he calls a "gear whore." He's not the paid BladeHQ poster child, but it was our pleasure to work with him.

  • Thanks KnifeHQ for the opportunity. Ben the video turned out great! I hope to snatch the pebble from your hand someday ; ) Seriously great vid. And most important, it was just fun getting out to the mountains and having a good time.

  • @Cr0cket20 Anytime you want to work on your pebble snatching, let me know. What a riot this was. Thanks again!

  • To be brutally honest I've found your blade presentations to be a bit rubbish. But this...this is something else in the most awesome of ways. Crocket is great in front of the camera, photography and production values are ace. I hope Benchmade gave you some money because this is amongst the best commercials for a folder I've seen.

Please do keep this up, as a consumer and customer this is what I want. Great work!

  • I wish I had a Grip so much but the availability where I live is nightmarish.

  • shit, batoning with a folder (especially while locked) is fucking abuse lol, but I mean hell at least it gives you an idea of how tough the knife is

  • @KnifeHQ The funny thing is that if it broke, then benchmade would freak out on you. Since it's good press, they're probably just enjoying the praise of their excellent design.

  • For an outdoor heavy use folder i use a CS Recon one

  • Best Benchmade knife test I have seen to this date keep up the great vids and reviews

  • that would qualify as abuse i would never drive it into wood but with that being said its awesome to see that the 100 bucks or so you'll pay for this knife is totally worth it i own several benchmades including a pre-production number mini griptillian and ill have to say i love it and when benchmade says life time warranty they mean it ive had to send it back before because of something i did , i didnt have my original recipt but they fixed it sharpened it and sent it back ASAP

  • Nice to see Crocket show up on a Blade HQ review! The Bechmade Griptilian is definitely a hard charging little folder. As a medic, I opted for the modified sheepfoot blade on my Griptilian. It's been a great blade from day one! I've had it about 3 years now.

    Great Review!

  • I wonder if the folks at spyderco watched this. There are so many ways to use your folder. and I get his point. If you dont try it out batoning locked up then how will you know if it will fail on the average joe? I own a grip, 710, and a 915, a native, an endura, and a resilience. Still looking for the game winner.

  • You don't baton a folder with the blade locked. You unlock it and then baton it.

  • Very nice video, definitely would enjoy this type of video from you guys.

    Subbed.
