Everytime I sing this song my tongue gets tied. Im almost being serious about that haha. Plus I get the lyrics horribly wrong. Still, this is one of my favorite songs.
Burnside said he couldnt command an entire army, because he had not enough experience. Lincoln persisted on it, making him have to take the offer. Thats Lincolns mistake, not trusting a leader's judgement. He still commanded the 9th core very well. In that the North should be proud. Also, who can name every general Lincoln tried at commanding from start to finish? I cant, for there are too many!

Great performance. This is one of the less-recorded Civil War songs.
Although the song says the troops will burn down Richmond, it was
the retreating Rebel troops who set the fires. It all happened in
April 1865. Lee surrendered shortly thereafter and a few days later,
on Good Friday, Lincoln was assassinated.
Seems like a long time ago, but my grandfather was alive then.
Thanks for posting.

This song was sung by the Rebels, mocking the Union's failure to capture Richmond.

I recall hearing this band for the first time in the '80s. It was at the Fort Branch event in N.C.
