This fantasie is probably Dowland's best-known for modern players and listeners, made popular in the late 20th century by performances and recordings by Julian Bream and other guitarists and lutenists. It appears to have been quite popular in its own day, since versions of it appear in numerous manuscripts and Robert Dowland's 1610 Varietie of Lute-lessons. The piece evolves from a series of contrapuntal sections with echoing themes to a series of scale passages that give way to a rollicking dance. The piece concludes with single singing melodic notes over a bass line that drives the piece to an explosive cadence.—Jeff Noonan
