Have to agree that Goldsmith had terrible luck when it came to the Oscars.
I can accept Jaws (just about accept) and ET beating Wind and The Lion and Poltergeist, but Patton, Star Trek The Motion Picture, Under Fire, Basic Instinct and Mulan failing to inferior scores really is hard to take. And Chinatown loosing to Godfather Part II was just bizare, since The Godfather score was ruled inelligible due to incorporating a previous theme by the composer. Ennio Morricone fared worse.
