Christoph Graupner was the music director in Darmstadt, Germany where he worked for the Landgraves of Hessen-Darmstadt for nearly 50 years. The chalumeau was a precursor of the clarinet with a softer sound. Peasant music was captured by many baroque composers, including Telemann. The popularity was no doubt related to the electors of Saxony double role as Kings of Poland, where German musicians and composers encountered Polish music first hand. Brian Clark's "Prima la Musica!" has peforming editions of this suite available as both score and performing sets. Be sure to inquire ;)
