Browder talks about the setting up the Hermitage Fund and getting early investors on board, including Republic National Bank's founder Edmond Safra. His investments in Russia quickly exceeded $1B. However, Browder was soon confronted by the Russian "oligarchs", who in 1998-99, went, according to Browder, on "an orgy of stealing". In 2006, Browder was blacklisted by the Russian government as a "threat to national security" and denied entry to the country.
