Smirnov Fencing 1982 Part 1

Reigning World and Olympic Champion Vladimir Smirnov in Training for the 1982 Rome World Championships.
Smirnov was killed by his opponents broken blade in a freak accident during the team event in Rome .
This is a tribute to Smirnov and his family from me and all those who saw him fence and were inspired by his skills .

my coach was there, in the room, when it happened. he still has nightmares about it to this day.

My source is a book called "By the Sword", by Richard Cohen, and there you can read that the blade from a broken sabre went through the fencing mask, THE EYEBALL, and into his brain (About 7 cm). He was alive until when the competitions were over, and after that they took away his life-support, because he was brain-dead.

So, now you know.
