I think the coolest thing RTD did with relaunching the series was having so many "common" people be a part of the Doctor's extended family. No journalists; no savages from other planets, no aliens, no scientists. Just 'regular' people like Rose/Martha/Donna/Jackie/Micke­y.

Ok, Captain Jack is special and no longer human.
