how did you manage to solder the stereo ic directly to the board? i always use sockets but maybe i don't need to, eh?

your schematics and your bread board set up is not the same!

The circuit that was breadboarded is the first schematic presented with the exception that the potentiometer was simply replaced with a fixed voltage (Vdd). But yes, there is a small discrepancy.
