From our landrover we saw 3 lions at a wildebeest kill. 16 hyenas were gathered around them, trying to steal the food. At Idube Game Reserve in South Africa. Awesome sighting, managed to catch this footage before the memory card filled up....

  • hmmm are we meant to assume the lions killed the wildebeest&the hyenas are trying to muscle in?? cos its a known fact that hyenas usually make the kill, then the lions steal it,then the hyenas round up&steal it back, but the filmers want to make it look like the lions made the kill cos theyre biased.

  • the filemaker (me) just sat and watched the whole thing happen :) the lions made the kill the night before (other landrovers had witnessed this and notified our ranger by radio) and this was early the next morning, when the hyenas were muscling in. Actually the lions usually make the kill (hunters) and hyenas steal (scavengers). Amazing thing to see and the noise was incredible!

  • @KMDS909

What? There is no hint that the filmers are assuming the lions made the kill. They are some tourists that just came by on their tour in that moment.

By the way it does happen now and then that lions kill an animal. Why would one even wind betrayal unless he is biased against lions?

  • We know the lions made the kill, because another group saw the kill as it happened and radioed it in the night before (all game drive vehicles communicate by radio and keep other rangers and trackers posted on what's happening in the area so they can take guests to see the various sightings).

  • Too short - I want MORE!!

  • I know! ran outta memory - really sucked :)

  • @roseninja it's incorrect that lions usually make the kill. I'm not denying they may have in this circumstance, but overall, hyena hunts are more successful than lion hunts (lions succeed at *most* 30% of the time; hyenas, at *least* 50% of the time) and night vision study after night vision study has confirmed that lions steal from hyena more than the other way 'round.

  • @iduberobtheranger,

But by all accounts the stats and experts point toward hyenas being highly efficient and ruthless hunters with a far higher kill/success rate than lions, the latter being more likely to scavenge.

Would you not agree that the hyena is a much misaligned, mis-understood animal as they are not deemed as aesthetically "noble" looking as lions, not to mention their villainous roles in Disney cartoons? Most also appear to find their yelping and "laughing" distasteful.

  • @KMDS909 Yea yea yea, Ive heard that story a million times. The truth of the matter is yea, lions do steal kills just like hyenas do. Its the wild (cut throat) you get food when you can. Sometimes Hyenas win, sometimes lions win. There's nothing usual about the wild and each day or night is different.

  • @nihuskies12 In the Wild, you wouldn't be alive long enough to show the type of pussy you'd be.

  • @roseninja "Lions usually make the kill ( hunter ) and hyenas steal ( scavengers )" You should watch some more documentaries and read up a little bit because that statement is stupidly false. Hyenas have about an 80% success rate when they hunt, Lions are at about 40%, Lions ALWAYS scavange off every other predator ( Hyenas, Leopards, Cheetahs ). Lions = scavengers, Hyenas = Hunters. Stop learning from Disney movies.

  • @roseninja sorry, i meant to direct it at the KMDS909 idiot.

  • @roseninja hm. what's yr f'n point?

  • @KMDS909 You should probably crack open a zoology or biology book. Hyenas are well known scavengers, while Lions are well known predators.
