This is the "Russell Brown technique" for creating masks based on the pixels in your image. I explain what masks are, how they work, and then I show you (quickly) how to make a mask that is based on the image you're working on.

This separates your picture into different sections and lets you change hue, saturation, and other nifty things separately for different parts of your image.

  • is this how they create a video where everything is in color except for one object that happens to be black and white? and u wonder how did they do that? i bet it's a video mask or something!

  • @DestinyQx Small Canon digital cameras let you do that automatically by picking a colour and processing the video internally. Check out the SD1300/SD1400/SD780/SD4000/... et cetera.

  • The GIMP can do this now? The main reason I bought Photoshop was for proper masking support... how things have changed.

(Well, the Gimp's interface is still a huge mess, so I think I'll still to PS, but it's good to know the open source team is still working hard.)

  • great vid - very helpful, and i'm diggin' on the galactic or whatever's playing in the background!

  • Haha, thanks. The New Mastersounds, actually. (songs 102% and Bus Stop No. 5 I think)
