Japanese coastguard hit Chinese fishing boat at Diaoyu Island Video 1-中国渔船在钓鱼岛遭日本海上保安船撞击录像6段全版1

OKYO, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Japan's Coast Guard arrested the captain of a Chinese fishing boat early Wednesday near the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea despite China's protest.

The trawler's captain, Zhan Qixiong, a 41-year-old Chinese national, was then taken to Ishigaki Island in Japan's Okinawa Prefecture on a patrol boat around 7 a.m. (2200 GMT Tuesday).

The Coast Guard did not arrest the other 14 crew members, all Chinese, but had the ship carrying them move to an area off Ishigaki and remain there during their captain's questioning.

According to Japanese media, the captain was arrested on suspicion of "obstructing public duties" in connection with collisions with Coast Guard patrol boats.

On Tuesday, two Japan Coast Guard patrol boats and the Chinese fishing boat collided in waters off the Diaoyu Islands.

No injuries were reported, but the fishing boat was then intercepted by Japanese patrol boats.

On Wednesday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry lodged a strong protest against Japan over the detention of the boat.

Assistant Foreign Minister Hu Zhengyue summoned the Japanese Ambassador to China Uichiro Niwa to lodge the protest.

This was the second time within 24 hours that the Chinese government summoned the Japanese ambassador and lodged solemn representations on this issue.

Hu demanded that the Japanese side immediately release the ship and crew members on board and guarantee the safety of the persons and the ship.

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Song Tao on Tuesday summoned the Japanese ambassador and lodged solemn representations on Japan's interception of the Chinese fishing boat.

Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Jiang Yu had expressed grave concern over the incident earlier Tuesday.

"The Diaoyu islands and its adjacent islets have been Chinese territory since ancient times," Jiang said at a regular press conference when asked to comment on the issue.

"We demand Japanese patrol boats refrain from so-called law enforcement activities in waters off the Diaoyu islands and actions that would threaten the safety of Chinese fishing boats and their crew," Jiang said.

"We will closely follow the situation and reserve our right to take further actions," Jiang said.

In Tokyo, the Chinese embassy to Japan made solemn representations with the Japanese Foreign Ministry over the arrest, demanding the immediate release of the captain and the boat to avoid an escalation of the incident, the embassy said.

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku said Wednesday Japan and China are trying to handle the situation calmly, and the incident will not affect Japan-China relations.

"We will handle the matter firmly in accordance with law," he told reporters, according to Kyodo News agency. "It is necessary for Tokyo not to heat up in dealing with the incident."

The islands appeared on China's map since the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

There are records about the islands in a book published during the rule of Yong Le (1403-1424) in the Ming Dynasty, more than 400 years before Japan claimed discovery of the Diaoyu islands in 1884.

Japan never questioned China's sovereignty over the islands before the Sino-Japanese war of 1894-1895.

Geologically, the islands are attached to Taiwan. The waters around the islands are 100 to 150 meters deep, and there is a 2,000-meter-deep oceanic trench between the islands and Japan's Okinawa islands.

Fishermen from China's Taiwan and Fujian and other provinces have conducted activities such as fishing and collecting herbs in this area since ancient times.

In June 2008, a Taiwanese fishing boat and a Japanese patrol boat collided about 9 km south of the Diaoyu Islands. The Taiwanese ship sank but all crew members were rescued.

  • Even if it was true, the chinese are wrong because they are invading other territories. In normal situation those invaders would be bombed, but since the Japanese prefer to make thing more peacefully by establishing dialogue, the chinese were not bombed.

The Japanese coast guard try for several times sending warnings in Japanese, Chinese and English to stop, but instead of obeying them, they decided to hit the coast guard which was a crime.

See this clip and you will know more about your PLA. They kill our people with no gun in hand on transport ship on Spratly. Show me clip Vietnamese army kill your soldier or people like that. We never forget this scene

  • @onebloodism Paracel Islands belong to Viet Nam till 1974 China attacked & occupied and Spratly in 1988. You should read more before talk about anything. You should read UNCLOS, & DOC. South China Sea doesn't mean Southern Sea belong to China. Your army act like pirates.

We never declare South China Sea belong to Viet Nam, we just declare Paracel & Spratly belong to Viet Nam. It's difference. It's China's Expansionism

  • @onebloodism Yeah, You know people come home but don't know who died in VietNam. You should think about China 1000-2000 years before, I don't hate Chinese people but I hate your government. Show me clue for your opinion "South China SEA Belong to CHINA". It's too far away from your big island Hainan.

  • @buithuchung I laughed a lot after reading ur comment. My friend's father joined the Vietnam War, he came home safely, my tutor in australia threw bombs in Vitnam, he came home safely. thats true many soldiers died in Vietnam. For me as a chinese, I dont want to see wars between our two countries because we all are asian and we have many things in common. I can do nothing if u hate chinese. We wont declare the whole world belongs to China, but South China SEA Belong to CHINA.
