(Please reduce the screen image size for better quality.) An ascent of Helvellyn, England's third highest mountain. The climb starts in Patterdale and ascends to the 'Hole in The Wall', taking in views of the southern part of the Helvellyn range. The climb then crosses Striding Edge to the summit of Helvellyn, descending via Swirral Edge, before taking in the summit of Catstye Cam and the view over Ullswater. The descent then takes in the view of Helvellyn from Red Tarn, before returning to The Hole in The Wall. NB: Sadly, two people have recently died on Striding Edge due to the adverse weather conditions (January 2008). Please equip yourself properly and take great care if attempting the climb in the winter.

  • Fantastic! striding edge looks a bit too scary for me.

  • Just treat it with respect and you'll be fine :) You don't have to go along the peak of the edge, there is a lower path that many people take.

  • Thanks. I live near cliffs and I'm not good with heights there, so the thought of heights either side scares me. Would taking the lower path avoid that? I'd love to go up there.

  • Yes, the lower path takes you away from the pinnacle of the edge, but only about 20ft below it. If you pause the video at 2 minutes you can see the lower path on the right side of the edge. As long as you're sensible, with good weather conditions, you should be fine. I hope you manage to get up there, it really is an exhilarating experience.

  • Wow! 28 times Cortina? I'm jealous :) I'll be doing it for the third time in a few weeks. I read a comment by another poster who described climbing Helvellyn as "one of the most uplifting experiences of my life". I thought that summed it up nicely. Everybody should do it once (or perhaps 28 times :)
