for those of you that are interested the face in the first few frames is actually a Gypsy girl, took a long time to identify her as so few Gypsies survived and even fewer spoke about their experiences
I first saw this in the late 1960's. It was in 7th grade World History. Absolutely shocking at the time. Hard to believe how much more hardened we have become, harder to believe that the most "civilized" country in the world perpetrated this horror on the world. Their reasons were many, but their excuses ring hollow...
Irregardless of what you "think of Jews"; man's inhumanity to his fellow man is inexcusable. Sad to think that we are easily capable of doing it again.
I'm writing a paper about controversies regarding cinematic representations of the Holocaust for an analytical Holocaust Literature class. In my mind this is the best artistic representation of such a tragedy. The one thing that stands out the most for me in this film, is the fact that their is no mention of Hitler's name or of Jews...which in turn has raised issues and concerns. But I appreciate Resnais' intentions in doing this.
the holocaust...wow. the jews couldnt even be called human..they were irrecognizable. they were literally skin and bones. the part where the nazis were bulldozing the bodies into the mass graves was absolutely sickening. but how could a people that had to endure such torture inflict the same to another people?? the jews in palestine are trapping the people in their homes and killing the minority group with a force that cannot be countered. this only proves how ignorant people are.
