Mr. Vargas is magnificent in the role of the Duke. His projection and clarity are a joy to hear! His style (including his adding of syllables to words) is a lot like Maestro Pavarotti, IMO. And Madam. Netrebko, what can anyone say? She has been my favorite for years and years.

This whole concert was superbly arranged. The performances of all four were high class, both when they came out individually or together. I also thought the conductor did a great job.

I think this fourth act of Rigoletto established Verdi as a genius. All these is goings-on while a storm rages outside. How do you arrange and organize all this sensory input? That's what genius is all about. You have to know the story to know what I'm talking about.

Rigoletto was his magnum opus until Otello three decades later, and then a few years later, considered the greatest of all, Falstaff.

I've heard people say she sings out of tune a lot, that she has a dead facial expression on stage, and that she's famous more for her looks than her singing. Not sure about all that, but I can say from viewing this clip that I would see where they get those ideas. Vargas does project really well and is super clear, but it seems like he's often out of tune here, especially the chromatic high parts. Granted it's probably the most difficult opera ensemble ever written for tenor.
