If you mean the regular 2.5" hard drive. The SSD have no moving part inside, SSD has a lot more Cache, so that it take 1/10 of time to get ready to process data compare with regular hard drive. Also, nothing spin inside, it claim to last longer, and it is way faster than the 7200 RPM hard drive. But way more expensive. If you mean by using USB of the SSD drive, then the speed might be limit, since the USB 2.0 is slower than the SATA II. Hope this help.

I think I'd rather use a flash drive for boot

anybody know the diferences between SSD drives and external 2.5" drives ?? Except for the sata and usb connections.... Are the external 2.5" hard drives locked somehow to a maximum speed because of the usb ???

@scriglada
Yeah that is right. However, the technology will advance over time and SSD write speed will improve. HDD platters, on the other hand, will eventually reach their maximum safe and controllable speed so their read-write speed can only get so fast.

I find it interesting how they do not highlight that a lot of SDDs actually have SLOWER write speeds than HDDs. Then again, this is essentially a marketing video; what is shown is valid, but what makes the video unscientific is the omission of any data writing tests.

That isn't to say all SSDs are like that, though. There are a number of SSDs that have somewhat slower read speeds than normal (still damn fast, mind), but have a blazingly fast write speed as well.

SSDs have been around for a LONG time. It's just that they were usually exclusively for business applications until somewhat recently, if I remember correctly.
