I'm struggling with it at the moment.I also got McAfee with my laptop and after a month pestering for updates started. First I simply unticked McAfee from Startup, but it still shows up (even though status is still disabled in Win startup). Then I looked throughMcAfee options and disabled one by one to at least stop it from using resources. Then I looked through many forums and I found out that McAfee put downloadable uninstaller for it, BUT to use it you have to subscribe!!!

@184Films If you really wanted to you can actually use the McAfee firewall to block McAfee from connecting to the internet. I haven't tried this yet, but if I did I imagine that it would stop McAfee from tying to install updates. If you want to, give this a try:
McAfee Internet Security Suite > Web and Email Protection > Firewall > Internet Connections for Programs > (Everything that has to do with McAfee) > Block
And if you're looking for a new anti-virus, I suggest trying 'avast!'
