  • Even Stranglers Demos piss all over these spotty teenage bands and their twee tunes, I mean how complex is this tune.

  • Anyone notice how Hugh sings the demo, but the album version has J.J. giving it the croon? I think J.J.'s vibe suits this better, although I love Hugh's vocals (ie. Outside Tokyo, Thrown Away, Bear Cage, etc.)

  • Second shot at this would have been -oh-you were all brilliant-you really were.

  • I love both versions. I prefer the Piano and the more subtle drumming in the final version though. I terms of Cornwell vs. Burnell, I like both of their attempts equally. Burnell's deeper voice suits the final version, whilst Hugh's distinctive voice matches this more energetic take.

  • @almklit That's right , actually is : Kayleigh not Keyleigh , the first two chords are the same .

  • @almklit, you are right. it does sound very similar. good spot!

  • Marillion ripped this song off if you listen keighley closely it is very similar.

  • great that dave put the piano into this song it changed it for the better, daves keys and hughs vocals should have been the way and no drums

  • Read the Stranglers book. It cies that Strummer was at early Stranglers gigs and said o Hugh he wanted a group like them. Incidentally, I'd have liked to have heard a perfect version of this. It carries Cornwell's edge. Perhaps he should have sang the final version. Theres certainly a nod to the future Golden Brown when he oralises in the musical break.

  • MoveOverCasanova - Some of it was sarcasm, some of it wasn't. Have you read No Mercy the AUTHORISED biog? Anyway I don't disagree with all of what you're saying but I think Stranglers,Clash and Pistols were all great bands. Admittedly the Starnglers were more sophisticated musically but all 3 matured as they went on (admittedly it was post-Pistols for Lydon, Cook, Jones) and all were guilty of some juvenile posturing and shock tactics - the Stranglers included!

  • sure JJB had his violent moments especially in the beginning, but they moved from that away immediately - (btw non violence is NOT automatically maturity!)

and things like peaches - you are just another one who does not understand the complete sarcasm in many of their lyrics - randy newman suffered the same misunderstandings.

they even got problems with the women liberation scene because of the strippers at battersea park gig, i mean what can you say.....

  • MoveOverCasanova - "Stick my fingers right up your nose"!"Beat you til you drop"!"Peaches"!"I feel like a wog"Mimed wanking and strippers on stage! So much more mature than the mere rowdies! Don't get me wrong I like a lot of the music, but spiritually mature??!!!

I guess you're referring to Strummer's rather stupid Red Army Faction T-shirt. I think he wore it once and then decided it was a mistake. And I think "Straight To Hell" by the Clash is as mature as anything the Stranglers did.
