Jason does care about his kid, that's why he's stayign away. Seeing Michael with a bullet in his head was a enlightening experience. He knows he's in too deep to get out of the mob and he also knows that he can't truly keep his son safe if he were in his life. Case in point, he was kidnapped by Russians in order to get to him. Knowing his limitations does not make him a dead beat Dad, it makes him smart. A true father puts his child's needs ahead of his own and that is what Jason is doing.
