PART 8

Then WXYT-AM talk show host, David Newman was the guest of the Libertarian Party of Wayne County on July 15th 1999. In one respect he was the guest speaker, but in many ways he was the guest listener.

Many veteran libertarians will see themselves as the ones Mr. Newman is listening to.

David Newman a Hit in Dearborn

Talk show host David Newman ofWJR-AM was a big
hit at the monthly meeting of the Wayne County LP at
La Trattoria in Dearborn on July 17.

Skipping the usual speech and Q and A, Newman used
his talk show format in posing several questions that
interest him about libertarianism and then asked the
50-plus present to respond to any or all of his queries.
He wanted to know: Do libertarians want to gain
political power directly or to spread the ideas for
others to pick up on; are their gradations of
libertarianism; does the US have a leadership role in
the world; what about entitlements, scenic
preservation; what about the role of the trial lawyer?
Libertarians love to answer such questions and rose to
the bait with enthusiasm. Newman seemed absorbed in
the answers and added follow-up questions.

Many of his comments and questions revealed a
clearly libertarian trend in his thinking. He understood
our free market answer to environmental issues. On
government regulation of personal behavior he said,
"To call it the 'nanny state' is too kind. It should be
called the 'nanny goat state,' eating everything in its
path." He was impressed with the fact that we are the
only political party with a clear, consistent philosophy
behind it.

He was funny, intent and respectful, just another guy
in the room. And we thoroughly enjoyed him.

organizing the event. La Trattoria was very efficient in
handling the dinner.
