  • The Irish are an old nation, not an ex-colony. So they should speak their original language like the Germans in Germany, French in France etc. Never give up your treasures cheaply or for the convenience 'cause it will cost you on the long run.

  • I'm a learner of Irish and I can say it is complicated, particularly pronunciation. However, we all learned how to spell and pronounce wacky English words so Irish is certainly doable.

Why don't Irish people speak their own language? Its use was/is frowned upon. My great grandfather was an Irish speaker and refused to use it because it was seen as being the lowly language. If he spoke Irish his credibility would have diminished. English was the language of the educated.

  • I'm not sure if I am pronouncing the names of characters in Irish mythology correctly. Characters like:

    Aoi Mac Ollamain

    Aodh

    Badb

    Tlachtga

    Ériu

  • @GeologyRocks101 It was forced out of us by the English

  • @celticbattleaxe and @ShmelloJones Irish is indeed recognized by Ireland and the European Union as an official language of Ireland, as well as English. Nice video by the way!

  • @NaJoJo Yeah, it sucks. And there aren't any schools around here who would teach it. I'm learning on my own for now. My advantage is that languages come quickly to me. I took two years of Italian in high school, and I fooled true Italians into thinking that I was one of them! I wouldn't say that I was/am necessarily fluent, but I was the top of my class, and I still remember enough that if I went to Italy, the people might confuse me for a native.

  • @celticbattleaxe I have been learning Irish since I was 4 - I'm 18 now and I am still not fluent. It's a very sad thing but in my opinion, it is taught very badly in schools, except if you go to a 'Gaelscoil' , which is where every subject is taught through Irish-or you live in the Gaeltacht.

  • @ShmelloJones Oh good! :)

I'm currently learning Munster dialect. The Ulster dialect is So fluid, but Munster is easier for me. :)

I hope I'll be able to do both well in time.

  • @celticbattleaxe i know!:(. its not the official language but as far as i know you have to take it in school:) theyre trying to bring it back

  • @ShmelloJones WHAT??!! That is bogus! If I was there, back in time, I'd give the English an earful...in Gaelige :).

That just sucks. So, it's still not the official language? That's odd, since new laws are read in Gaelige.

  • @celticbattleaxe England came to Ireland a long time ago and forced them all to speak English with threat of death.

  • WHAT???!! English is the official language in Eirinn? Ye Gods!

Why the $%&# isn't Gaelige the official language? They are an independent nation.
