Kanuka Clancy...is she perhaps some sort of reference to Tom Clancy?
What I like most of Patlabor is the realism of it all; it's as close as an anime will ever get to showing 'realistic' mecha. Note the lack of over-the-top powers in any of the Labors.
I don't remember which one it was, but I do remember watching the Patlabor movie with the weird sea monster...
Thanks again, Oji!

What I don't get about Kanuka is the eyes. It's strange: The characters who are japanese have the generic big eyes, but Kanuka has accuall slanted "asian" eyes. What was that about?

I didn't know patlabor series was so rare! I remember watching the movies both on encore action and the television series on an asian channel my mothers cable used to get. When I looked up to buy patlabor 2 the movie it was nearly $80!!!! It's a shame I have to burn this to dvd as I feel the quality will be lower it's such a great and well animated movies. I didnt like the series too much as it didnt seem to have the same feel as the movies did. :(

I'll be discussing the movies presently, but yes, the movies, especially the 2nd one, have a more serious tone than the OVA/TV series (but see the TV's Griffin eps for a less comic approach there.)
Sadly, USMC's license on the movies expired, which went to Bandai, who put them in their high-priced (rip off) premium imprint (with Gunbuster and Honneamise.)
There are editions of both movies available for under $30 on Amazon, and used for half that.
