Painter- not bad but you are making it a lot harder than it should be. Dave Navaro just alternates between G and A. By getting the strumming down on the A chord you don't have to mess with the g string seperately.
I just covered this song and watched Dave Navaro play it on several videos. Also no one that has posted a video lesson for this song is addressing the intro which includes the D chord.

Hey man, Hitting the b string on third fret. You're supposed to hit it on the 4th fret but for sitting around picking the third works fine. Then when you get used to it you can just move it up a fret. Peace!
