From the movie "Lady on a Train" (1945)

"Lady on a Train" is one of Durbin's better movies, especially among her later efforts. However, critics at the time were vicious with mostly negative reviews. They wouldn't let her grow - the demand was for her to play light comedy with lots of singing, and nothing else. However, the clever noir-comedy-murder mystery is well-received by critics today.

Still, I have to hand it to Time magazine for the nastiest yet most hilarious review, especially in its description of this particular scene:

"Lolling on a bed, she sings Silent Night to her father by long-distance telephone, while the camera treats her the way John Gilbert used to treat Garbo, in a manner that must be seen to be believed. For fanciers of the strange and terrible, Miss Durbin's quietly orgiastic salute to the Nativity is a must."

  • i loved this movie, wish i could find it she was so beautiful and man could see sing

  • Bubba - this movie is available as part of the "Deanna Durbin Sweetheart Pack" - six Deanna Durbin movies, including this one. It costs around 20 US dollars.

  • WOW! She's gorgeous! I have only seen her movies up to 1939. I like her with light hair. This song + her voice = heaven

  • Thanks for the nice comment, Tori! I envy you - there are a good dozen Deanna Durbin movies you have yet to see. The one this is taken from, "Lady on a Train", is perhaps the one movie that could be classified "screwball noir". I think you'll like it. Incidentally - I LOVE your channel!

  • What a vintage scene in the retro American films!

  • @Lesqueek Yeah, that's a funny scene from the movie is "It's a Date" (1940), with Deanna starring opposite Walter Pigeon and Kay Francis.

  • anybody know the durbin film where she was in the park with her fella and after he kisses her says her lips were so bitter. She says must be the poison I took then they have a wide shot of the park and there are many couples and all the men sit up and say poison did you take poison and all the girls laugh at the joke.

  • The greatest version !!!

  • She really did look as great as she sings!

  • What a voice! Such a gift! Thank you so much for posting this. :-)

  • will any of present day "stars" be loved so much as these of the 30s & 40s in another 60 years?
