  • okay first thank you lord chauncey for posting these transatlantic series sessions i love Sarah and this is a real treat. second, just curious but is that tim o'brien on mandolin?

  • @ProductOfANationmusi No, Tim O'Brien was not present for this series of the Sessions. He did take part in an earlier series though.

  • You know, I don't really like the addition of the... is it a fiddle? It sounds like a fiddle, and I like fiddles, I just don't like it in this song. This is such a great song though.

  • @captainironears The original studio version on SJ's album also features a fiddle (violin) played by Stuart Duncan. In her live shows, the fiddle is played by her bandmate Alex Hargreaves. This song's always had a fiddle except when performed by Sarah solo (just her clawhammer banjo).

  • @captainironears i totally agree with you on the fiddle not being great in this session but this fiddler didn't actually play it like it was originally written and played on the track. on the original studio track the fiddle sounds great and fits. but this fiddler seems to improvise most of it i guess

  • @ProductOfANationmusi No 2 performances of this song are exactly alike. Whoever plays the fiddle is allowed to 'improvise' within the confines of the song's melodic structure. Stuart's version on the album is the foundation for the instrument, but Alex and others will play it their own way. Not better or worse, just different.

  • Sarah could sell 100 different albums of covers. She should cover Tapestry, Beatles One, Pretenders, Elvis Costello, xmas carols, hanukkah ballads, rev Huber's athiest parables, I'd buy all of it.

  • @dropthumb2 I think it's a five string..

  • @captainironears Well sorry I do like the addition of the fiddle!

  • Her singing is the topper.

I notice she is playing a banjo with six strings, but as far as I can tell she is playing the same as playing clawhammer on five string. What's the deal with her using a six string?

  • @ProductOfANationmusi We don't see much of him but that's Sam Bush on Mando

  • Wow.

  • Great stuff altogether

  • @ProductOfANationmusi ^What this guy said is what I meant to say.

  • last episode was filmed near where i'm from yay , proud :). i just saw this and thought wow. "alela diane..might like her" . and then started fantasising about a duet :p

  • I can imagine a fiddle played more, perhaps with drone strings, appalachian-style, or whatever works !...On that subject..I would buy sight-unheard a CD of just appalachian, or, old-timey, fiddle/banjo with the majority of the tunes being in minor keys or, at least, with that lonesome, pitiful sound..!
