Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the boldest community fueling the best science and making the biggest impact in the fight against breast cancer. Except for skin cancers, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, but it can be successfully treated.
There are so many ways to get involved with Komen and help out: Komen Race for the Cure (150 Race for the Cure 5K events worldwide), Marathon for the Cure (13.1/26.2 miles), 3-Day for the Cure (60-mile walk), through the Komen Affiliates you can find local events, Passionately Pink for the Cure and Public policy activities through the Komen Advocacy Alliance.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure recommends that you know your risk by learning about your family health history and talking to your health care provider about your own personal risk. Get screened by having a mammogram every year starting at age 40 if you are at average risk. Have a clinical breast exam at least every 3 years starting at age 20 and every year starting at age 40 (the 5-year survival rate for breast cancer when caught early is 98%. When it's not? 23%). Ask your doctor which screening tests are right for you if you are at a higher risk. Know what is normal for you and report any changes to your health care provider. Make healthy lifestyle choices that may reduce your risk of breast cancer.
You don't have to be diagnosed with breast cancer to survive it. Co-survivors can be family members, spouses or partners, friends, health care providers or colleagues. Anyone who is there to lend support from diagnosis through treatment and beyond is considered a co-survivor. If someone in your life has been affected by breast cancer and you would like to learn more about the disease or how to offer support, this part of the Komen website is for you.
I'm the first view! Woo! Can't wait to be passionately pink!
