using this guys example about the dinner for the friend, wouldn't by the host's insisting that his friend partake of the meal be satisfying the host's ego of pride (for the amazing meal offered)..suddenly the friend felt obliged to accept after the friend gave him a guilt trip over how much trouble he went thru for him???

You JUST DON'T GET IT - the ego defenses come from the split off shadow side of the inner child that doesn't get it's needs met or defends from it's position - so to eradicate the ego you first have to heal the inner child and then nuture and secure the inner child, then as Jesus said "Lest you can be like a child you can't enter the kingdom of heaven" - meaning when your inner child is secure it will show you the entire universe's origin as God in you spiritual heart within... Theory will not.

Few caveats I see here.

Ego is survival mechanism geared to demand respect and approval. It goes nuts when it sense you lack in that department. Nothing wrong with that, when you are 4. However if you don't realize what is speaking in your head later and you identify with that voice and you let it drive....you are screwed.

Desire pursuit or desire ignoring is what brings suffering. Balance is the key.

Only when one knows themself down to the deepest layers and you understand how that is relected onto to outer world is there an action of intelligence. This intelligence with awareness acts as a light. So let's say the ego is darkness, it has intellect but it doesn't act from intelligence and it has limited awareness. When you with apply awareness which is light to darkness which is ego, the darkness vanishes, there is no entity 'getting rid of' it. Darkness cannot be, in the presence of light.
