Prasenjit Duara is a historian of Asia in the twentieth century. Duara was professor and chairman of the History department at the University of Chicago. Duara has spoken as a keynote lecturer or distinguished speaker at over 65 institutions around the world since 1996. His most recent work is The Global and the Regional in China's Nation-Formation (Routledge 2009). His work has been widely translated into Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
This talk focuses on the interactions between India, China and their South-East Asia neighbors through looking at China's and India's shared history, and comparing their development tracks. Duara will address areas of tension and cooperation between the two countries then turing to Asia's emergence as a region, by looking at ASEAN as a hub of this integration. the presentation concludes with China's and India's roles in ASEAN, their interactions with their neighbors and the prospects of China as a player in the future of Asian regionalism.
